Walker street housing estate murals

In September 2016 I was commissioned by City of Darebin to run art workshops with some of the resident kids from a housing estate in Northcote. We got creative, had fun, learnt, and had fun…

Then they gave me suggestions for imagery they would like to see as murals on some concrete bollards in the communal area on the estate. These suggestions came in the form of a big list of creatures! This list consisted of animals from the native countries of this ethnically diverse community, mythical creatures, and any other animals that captured the kids imagination on the day.

This series of blank panels seemed to lend itself to a storybook format and I began creating a narrative for this motley crew of fauna. Adding one of my ‘Solarquin’ characters seemed a good fit alongside a Pegasus, a Phoenix and a Dragon to form a simple fantasy tale that incorporates themes of celebrating uniqueness, bravery, and giving.

Here’s a music video of the finished artwork, and below are shots of the full finished panels as well as wide shots and details – Enjoy!
